It had only been twenty-four hours since Trenton had last been to the library, but it had changed dramatically. Notes were hung up on the walls, maps were spread out on one table, and what looked like a timeline was draped over the back of a chair.

“What is all this?” Trenton asked, glancing at the notes.

Kallista began pulling papers off the walls, stuffing them into a wooden crate. “Help me put these away before Cochrane gets here.”

Trenton stopped in the center of the room. “Tell me what’s going on.”

She reached around him to grab a map, but he stepped in front of her. “I don’t want the dimber damber to see this,” she said.

“Okay,” he said as she pushed past him, nearly knocking him over. “I get it. I’ll help you. But you have to tell me what’s going on. You promised to help me build the machines, which you haven’t. You claim you want to find your father, but you haven’t touched the dragon for days. You don’t eat, and you barely sleep. Tell me what’s wrong.”

Kallista pointed to a stack of maps. “Roll those up, and I’ll talk while we work.”

Trenton began collecting the maps. He expected them to be of the local area—and a few were—but most of them were of places as far away as the other side of the world. He rolled them into a tube and put them in the crate. “Okay, talk.”

Kallista scooped up a pile of notes and leaned against the table. “Have you ever wondered where the dragons came from?”

Trenton paused in the act of pulling sheets from the walls. “Not really. Why?”

“Think about it for a minute. What are the possibilities?”

Trenton rubbed his chin. When he and Kallista first discovered that dragons were real, he’d been so amazed it had never occurred to him to wonder where they came from. Since then, he’d spent most of his time trying to make sure they didn’t eat him.

He shrugged. “From other dragons, I guess. You know, where most animals come from. Maybe eggs or something.”

Kallista’s lips pulled down, making it clear he hadn’t passed her test. “Eggs. Well, let’s assume that no one noticed dragon eggs suddenly showing up around the world. Where did those eggs come from? You have to have mommy and daddy dragons to make baby dragons. But no one noticed any dragons or dragon eggs before, did they?”

Okay, so maybe that wasn’t the best answer. He tried again, this time giving it more thought. “What if they existed all along, but somewhere people never looked? Like a remote country. Or maybe . . .” He let out a thoughtful breath. “An island. Like a really remote island no one has ever been to.”

“Better,” Kallista said, and he mentally patted himself on the back. “Except, according to the stories my father found in Discovery and here, dragons began appearing all over the world at nearly the same time. That would be extremely unlikely if they all came from the same remote island.
